WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to mention contacts in their status updates. According to a post by feature tracker WABetaInfo, the feature was discovered in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.20.3. This function mirrors Instagram’s mention system, where the tagged user is notified of the update. However, the feature will be private, meaning only the uploader and the mentioned user can view the status.
How the Status Mentions Feature Works
The status mention feature is designed to streamline communication within the app. Users will be able to tag their saved contacts by using the ‘@’ icon within the text field. Upon tagging, the mentioned user will be notified and can view and reshare the status. A unique aspect of this feature is its privacy—only the user and the tagged contact will be able to see the status. This provides a more private and personalized way to interact on WhatsApp, as users can share updates with specific individuals without broadcasting them to all contacts.
WhatsApp’s Meta AI Voice Mode Also in Development
In addition to the status mentions, WhatsApp is also working on a new Meta AI voice mode feature. This feature will enable two-way voice communication with artificial intelligence. It is expected to offer various voice options, including accents from the US and UK, and may also include voices of public figures. These updates reflect WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience with innovative and personalized features.
