Meta Quest HDMI Link App Brings Expanded Connectivity to Meta Quest 3

Meta has launched a new app, Meta Quest HDMI Link, designed to enhance the connectivity options for its Meta Quest 3 mixed reality headset and other devices in the Meta Quest lineup. This innovative app allows users to link their headsets to HDMI, USB Type-C, and DisplayPort devices, transforming their wearable into a versatile output screen for watching media and playing games. This functionality, while previously available on the original Meta Quest via the Air Link feature, is now expanded and refined for the latest models.

Enhanced Device Compatibility with Meta Quest HDMI Link

The Meta Quest HDMI Link app offers a significant upgrade in
terms of device compatibility. Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro users can
now connect their headsets to a variety of devices, including handheld PCs,
gaming consoles, and laptops. The app enables users to output 2D content in
virtual reality (VR) with low latency, providing a smoother and more immersive
experience. This feature is comparable to Meta’s Theatre View, introduced in
the recent v67 software update, but with added functionality and flexibility.

Optimized Gaming and Streaming Experience

Meta promises that the Meta Quest HDMI Link app will deliver high-quality gaming and streaming experiences. Users can play games at 1080p resolution with a frame rate of 60 frames per second (fps) and enjoy “near-zero latency” performance. The app also allows for the floating screen to be resized and repositioned to suit user preferences. Moreover, the app supports the new Xbox Cloud Gaming beta, along with touch controllers and hand tracking, further enhancing its utility for gaming enthusiasts.

Limitations and Availability of the HDMI Link App

While the Meta Quest HDMI Link app brings exciting new features, it also comes with some limitations. A stable Wi-Fi network is essential for wireless content streaming, and some streaming apps with High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) or Digital Rights Management (DRM) might restrict the content users can stream on their headsets. Currently available through App Lab, the Meta Quest HDMI Link app is still in development but can be downloaded and tested by users today.
