Apple Phasing Out 2nd Generation AirPods

Apple is set to launch its fourth-generation AirPods this September, with the tech giant reportedly releasing two new variants. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new AirPods models will replace the current second and third-generation models. The upcoming entry-level version will take over from the second-generation AirPods, while the mid-tier variant is expected to succeed the third-generation AirPods, currently priced at Rs. 20,900 in India. The 2nd Generation AirPods will be phased out, marking the end of their production.

AirPods 4th Generation: Design and Features

The two new AirPods models will reportedly share the same design, with the key difference being the inclusion of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) in the mid-tier version. The entry-level model will not feature ANC, catering to users looking for a more affordable option. Apple will continue to offer the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) as its top-tier model, which currently boasts Apple’s H2 chip and advanced features like Adaptive Audio and enhanced Transparency mode.

Transition to USB Type-C and Future Updates

In line with Apple‘s recent shift towards USB Type-C, the new AirPods 4 models are expected to adopt this charging port, moving away from the proprietary Lightning port. This transition aligns with regulatory requirements in regions like the EU. While there is speculation about an update to the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) and a possible release of a new AirPods Max model, details remain scarce. However, it is anticipated that the updated AirPods Pro could introduce new Apple Intelligence features, potentially enhancing its competitiveness against rivals like Google’s Pixel Buds Pro 2.
